With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, organizations across the globe will be joining in solidarity to raise awareness and funds to fight this widespread disease. Science has not yet determined exactly why breast cancer happens, as it appears not to discriminate in those it afflicts; however with early detection and treatment, exceptionally high cure rates are possible. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women, affecting more than 1.38 million people yearly, however with awareness and early treatment, it is no longer one of the leading causes of death.
Since 1985, pink has been the color of choice for the Breast Cancer Awareness initiative, and this time of year, it is everywhere! From ribbons, key chains and pins; to t-shirts, limited edition watches and golf clubs – October fundraisers are bathed in pink. This common theme serves to remind people everywhere of the shared goal; to encourage women to take advantage of early detection screenings; and also to raise funds and in order to continue the search for an ultimate cure. With such deep and well understood meaning, sending anything pink to a breast cancer survivor – or someone still fighting the illness- is a thoughtful and meaningful gesture that speaks volumes as to your empathy as they face this challenge. Pink carnations, roses, lilies, peonies and gerbera daisies are all cheerful and beautiful ways to express your sentiments to the brave ladies in your life.
