It’s September – and it’s time for a new round of birthday celebrations! The sapphire is the birthstone of September, and its vibrant blue color is famous worldwide. Interestingly, sapphires can also be pink, purple, red, orange – even black! But it is the blue sapphire that holds people’s hearts and is a coveted, brilliant stone. When seeking to create a bouquet that is a floral representation of the precious gem, there aren’t a wide variety of choices – however blue delphinium, blue orchids, blue iris and blue hydrangea are all popular choices and make a stunning monochromatic bouquet. Traditionally, blue flowers are featured in a larger mixed bouquet of many flowers, providing a vivid contrast – like a stone in a setting, these blue flowers are set off by their gorgeous counterparts  

In medieval times, sapphires were used as accessories by clergymen, as they signified heaven. Those not in religious service picked up on the meaning and desired sapphires as blessings from heaven.  Sapphires are known for their color changing characteristics, and while they appear royal blue in natural light, they more resemble purple in low-lighting. In any gemstone, naturally occurring cracks are known as inclusions. With some sapphires, if the stone is cut correctly, these inclusions create a star-like pattern called an “asterism”.  This may have led to the pairing of the sapphire with the September birth flower – the aster.
