* Roses are cultivated in over 150 species, but none are found in the southern hemisphere.
* Roses have been grown in every color except true-blue or black, because roses do not have the necessary
gene to produce delphinidin, which is the source of a blue hue. The popular “black rose” is not really black – it is
* The first person to grow and tend to roses in the United States was none other than George Washington.
* Roses have spectacular lifespans and a remarkable ability to thrive. A rosebush at the Hildesheim Wall in Germany has been producing flowers for over 1,000 years. When in bloom, a rose bush in Tombstone, Arizona exhibits over 200,000 flowers, which are supported by an arbor perfect for sitting under.
* In the Middle Ages, rose oil was considered to be a luxurious and prestigious perfume, and was often used to
provide the intoxicating scent for the baths of royalty.
* The colors of roses signify different meanings – for instance, red represents passionate love, yellow stands for
friendship, and pink is given to show gratitude.
* The Cherokee Rose is the state flower of Georgia, but is actually from China – and scholars cannot explain how
it got there.
* Rose hips are fruits on the rose bush. They have more Vitamin C than even an orange – in fact, rose hips

The sunflower is a late spring flower which is a vivid staple in this season’s designs. It’s sunny yellow visage looks exceptional on its own, or surrounded by other vivid spring florals such as fuschia roses and orange lilies. You’ll want to open all the windows and let the spring stream in when this arrangement is in your home.
Did You Know? Sunflowers are not only beautiful, but they are also used for foods, medicines, and oils. And like most of us, they can’t wait to turn their faces to the springtime sun to enjoy its warmth!
Another popular way to decorate our homes in springtime is with vibrant and colorfully exotic tropical blooms. Red ginger plants, orange birds of paradise, purple orchids and yellow pincushion protea are arranged exquisitely in Beachside Paradise – and we even add the sand and seashells! This exciting arrangement is the perfect way to bid goodbye to spring and welcome the summer months.

Family has always been important to us at Bagoy’s Florist & Home, and of course our Moms hold a special place in our hearts. In honor of Mother’s Day, we decided to share a couple of stories of the special moms in our lives and how we honor them here at the shop. If you are looking for flowers or gifts for your Mother that are not only beautiful but come with a lot of heart, you’ve come to the right place.
A History of Great Moms: Current owner Chanda Mines shares this photo of her Mom in the early 80’s. “As you can see, the logo has changed since then”, she shares.” My mom’s passions have always been flowers and art. She and my dad owned Bagoy’s for 12 years before my husband and I bought it from them – the legacy goes on!”
Spending Time Together: For many years, we have welcomed our team’s children as part-time help around the shop so that Mom and kids can spend time together. This year Merion and her daughter Anna, who is a senior in high school, will work together on Sunday, continuing the tradition.
We are Moms Too: Owner Chanda has two beautiful daughters – and we have an employee pregnant with twins right now! Many moms have worked here over the last few decades, and we understand how special the bond between mother and child is.
Flowers Can Mean So Much: Bagoy’s Florist & Home customer Sara tells us her very special mom story. “My mom loves tulips and my father used to bring her tulips every week. My dad passed away 11 years ago, but since his death I have continued the tradition of bringing tulips to my mom. Bagoy’s has played a huge role in this, because they sell plump and healthy tulips, unlike those you see at the grocery store. They often have great weekly deals and offer a Tulip Punch Card. These specials have made it easier and more affordable to carry on my dad’s tradition of making my mom smile every week”.
It’s easy to see that flowers and mothers go together. This Mother’s Day, give the special moms in your life a beautiful bouquet, plant or gift from Bagoy’s Florist & Home, and write your own story.
Do you have a story that involves our Anchorage flower shop? We’d love to hear it – we love our local community of friends and neighbors.
May 14 represents our yearly celebration of one of the most important days of the year. Of course, our amazing moms deserve recognition year-round, but we love that they have this day to honor their devotion and dedication. And whether you are honoring your mother, stepmother, grandmother, or mother-in-law – this is your chance to express your appreciation to these very deserving ladies. Mother’s Day is almost here, and Bagoy’s Florist & Home is ready with gorgeous floral designs that will reflect her true beauty. Continue reading
Memorable occasions are made even more special when you include flowers and long-standing traditions. During the spring, one such tradition is the wearing of corsages for proms, Mother’s Day, or graduations.
The word corsage is French in origin and was strictly translated as “the bodice of a dress”. The flowers worn were called the “bouquet de corsage,” and over time, the term was shortened to simply “corsage.” In contemporary times, corsages are also worn on the wrist, held in place by beautiful wristlets or bracelets. Whichever your preference, you can be sure that Bagoy’s Florist & Home will provide the perfect floral accompaniment to your attire. Continue reading
There are so many amazing individuals in the Anchorage area who do the most important jobs with very little recognition. In addition to handling their daily workload with finesse, they also invest their time, show love and concern, inspire us to be better, or lend a shoulder to cry on. In May, we have the two chances to officially recognize them and to show gratitude for all of their dedication. National Teachers Week is May 7-13 and National Nurses Week is celebrated May 6-12.
Making it Personal: Chanda M., owner of Bagoy’s Florist & Home, shares that not only did she attend Ocean View Elementary, but so did both of her sisters, and both of her daughters. “Mr Peterson was my youngest daughter’s 3rd-grade teacher. He taught his class – and reminded us all – to ‘leave the world a better place than how you found it’. That little girl is now 22, and his words continue to inspire her every day.”
Mr. Peterson is just one of the many teachers that have made a positive impact in thousands of lives. Thank the very important teacher in your life with a gorgeous flower design to brighten their desk – and don’t forget a handwritten note to express what they have meant to you!
May 6th is National Nurse’s Day – and kicks off the week-long celebration which ends on May 12th, Florence Nightingale’s birthday. The week is meant to recognize the contributions that nurses make during some of the most poignant times of our lives. They sit with us, cry with us, hold our hands – and celebrate when a new baby arrives or a patient regains full health.
The team at Bagoy’s Florist & Home works closely with hospital staff every day, and we love these dedicated professionals. Let us know that you would like to send a special floral design to thank them during National Nurse’s Week and we will happily assist.
These occasions in May give us the opportunity to thank the unsung heroes in two challenging professions, but you can show gratitude every day! Who has made a difference in your life? You can trust the experts at Bagoy’s Florist & Home to design the florals that will touch their heart.
