Halloween’s Spirited Origins

As many as 3,000 years ago, the Aztec people honored their dead in a long-standing traditional festival that is celebrated today as Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). As long as 2,000 years ago, the Celtic people celebrated Samhain, a festival scheduled on the night when the veil between our world and that of the dead was believed to be thin enough to cross. The ancient Celts would light huge bonfires and dress up in costumes to confuse and ward off ghostly spirits.

Throughout history, the celebration has morphed and changed with Pope Gregory III’s 8th-century initiation of All Saints Day on November 1st and the eventual addition of All Souls Day on the 2nd of November.

Today, some of the spirited ancient Halloween traditions remain. Many cultures celebrate the Festival of the Dead from October 31 through November 2nd. We still dress up in costume on All Hallow’s Eve and talk of ghostly spirits. We gather together, and we still honor and remember the dead on All Saints Day and All Souls Day.
